There are multiple schools of thought but it would seem that many people don’t believe it is possible.
I’m in the other camp. I absolutely believe that you can become a millionaire software engineer. I don’t even have a single doubt about this.
There are multiple ways that you might become a software millionaire.
- You might have such a rare skill that big companies would pay you a huge salary. Extremely unlikely.
- You might be lucky to get in at ground level with a startup and be given some shares that years later are worth a fortune. Very unlikely and not something that you can control.
- You might have an idea for a product or app that could make you a millionaire. This is how quite a few people become software millionaires. But it’s a hard road and you will likely need funding to invest in developing the product before you see any substantial revenues. We hear a lot about the successful product companies, but we don’t hear much about the thousands of companies who fail because their product didn’t sell in sufficient numbers or at a high enough price to cover the costs. However, if you’re certain that you have a great product idea that you know will sell well, then go for it. The upside is potentially huge if you get it right. But beware of the big competitors with lots of cash who could quickly overtake you.
But what if you don’t have a good product idea? Can you still become a software millionaire? Of course you can.
You can start a business offering your software development services to the market. You don’t need any external funding to do this and you can grow it to multiple millions in revenues. And the good thing is that you can start generating revenue quite quickly.
Why am I so certain about this?
Because that’s what I’ve done.
I started life as a software developer working at a small, family-owned company. Over a period of 15 years, and 3 different jobs, I built up my experience and then started my own software development company out of my spare bedroom.
I didn’t have a masters in business. I didn’t have a single product idea that made any sort of financial sense. But I had good software development skills combined with a desire to take charge of my future by having my own company.
I set up the business with a partner and we bootstrapped it out of one of my spare bedrooms. We started with a small contract but within a few months we had landed our first 7-figure client and this was soon followed by another 7-figure client and other 6-figure clients. Within about 18 months we had a million-dollar run-rate. We went on to grow the company and subsequently landed a number of 8-figure clients.
So if anybody says to you that you can’t become a millionaire software engineer then you can point them at this blog as proof that it is very possible to achieve it.
As long as you have a commitment to make it work and a willingness to learn some new business skills then you could also become a software millionaire.
But just a few words of caution. I’m in no way suggesting that it’s easy to build a 7-figure business. It’s not a get-rich-quick scheme that will make you a millionaire overnight.
Launching a business and growing it to 7 figures and more will take real effort. You will have to work hard to get there. It could take you a number of years to hit one million dollars in revenues. But it is possible if you go about it the right way.
To add further proof, I recently read an interesting article about the best businesses to start.
In the section about service businesses they made a number of points that I regularly make:
- Service businesses are the best business for most people to start
- Service businesses are easy to start
- You can reach break-even sooner than with other businesses
- You require less startup capital than a product business
- You can have very high profit margins

So my question is this – Could you be the next millionaire software developer?
that’s exactly my goal
